A Monday Dinner

Not finishing the beans - a trivial-sounding moment that was actually the old instinct losing an argument.

One evening I ate some cornflakes at about 10am and didn’t eat again until around 7:30pm.

Dinner was:

  • fried egg
  • beans
  • pulled-pork croquettes
  • bubble and squeak

We don’t use much oil for the egg.

The croquettes and bubble and squeak were cooked in the air fryer, and the beans were microwaved.

And I didn’t even finish all the beans.

That sounds utterly trivial.

But it isn’t, really.

There was food left.

I was full.

And I stopped.

The old instinct would have been:

Finish it.

The new thought was:

I’m done.

The old thought hasn’t disappeared.

It just didn’t win that particular argument.
